Hi, my name is Mrs. Filgis. This will be the start of my 18th year of teaching. I taught fourth grade for one year, fifth grade for 10 years, and this will be the start of my seventh year at sixth grade. I have been lucky that 17 of my years teaching have been in Ross at the Middle School. :)
I have a daughter that will be in eighth grade this year and a son that will be in sixth grade. In my free time I like to watch my kids participate in extra curricular activities. My son's first love is football and I spend a lot of my time at his games and practices. He also enjoys basketball, wrestling, and lacrosse. My daughter is a competitive rock climber, so we spend quite a bit of time at the gym each week and we get to do some traveling for competitions. She is also in Science Olympiad which competes during the winter and spring months on the weekends, so I get to go spend more time in schools on the weekend! It is fun to get to watch them in their different activities.
Since I am a language arts teacher I am sure that you can probably guess that love to read. I enjoy realistic fiction the most. One of my favorite books that I read this summer was Phone calls from Heaven by Mitch Album. I am also reading The Watson's go to Birmingham right now and I am really enjoying it. I don't like sad books or sci-fi too much but I do like fantasy. I also think it's fun when you've read a book and then it comes out as a movie, like The Hunger Games and Divergent. I enjoyed the first two books in the Divergent series but have not read the third yet, so don't ruin it for me if you've read them. I read the book, The Giver when it first came out years ago and I am so excited to see the movie when it comes out, it was one of my favorite books. I can't wait to hear about all the different books you have read that you have enjoyed. I think that is one of the best ways to figure out what to read next, by talking to others to find out what they liked. You will be reading lots of books this year and it will be great if you can share what books you think are good with your classmates!
This will be a very exciting school year! We will be using Chromebooks later in the year which I think will make class very interesting. I have been working hard this summer attending workshops and trying to learn different activities/websites that we can use in class this year.
I look forward to getting to know everyone this year!
